Tour was just not that interesting, They said CRISPR was invented at the Broad Institute, Google CRISPR inventor to get the real story on that - UC Berekley as a huge claim to that invetnion, And yes the guide mentioned all the contributions of the Media Lab to our society but there is so much more here, We stood across the street from the beautiful Kresge Auditorium and MIT chapel but didn't go near it, We talked about Olive Smoot's body being used to measure the length of the Harvard Bridge but didn't close with the punch line: Oliver Smoot went onto become the head of the National Institute of Standards, We saw the Calder sculpture but didn't mention it was commissioned to act as a wind foil for the bad wind design of the Green building, I guess I'm saying put some effort into researching what you are showing and not just point out this building is this and that building is that, There are lots of stories here,
Our tour guide led us around campus and through several faculties. We got an overview of what makes MIT unique, both official things like the General institute Requirements or the art that is part of all construction as well as inofficial culture like the nerdy pranks. Most of the places seem to be publicly accessible but with a guide we can be sure to have seen the important spots. He also provided the context to tie everything together and answered any questions we had. Compared to the Harvard tour this concentrated less on the buildings and history (although that was also part of it) and more on what it's like to work and live on campus.
Loved the fact that it was an MIT student showing you around. Incredibly interesting if you want to know who invested/donated to MIT. Loved the fact that google, tripadvisor etc have offices based in Toronto to identify the best under grads!
Purchased a combo ticket for Harvard and MIT. Met our guide outside the main subway (Kendal -red line) Barbie our guide a graduate in Computer science gave us a detailed 70 minute tour of the campus - which included some buildings . We were able to enter a number of buildings (unlike the Harvard tour) which was excellent. The group was quite large so it was important to stay close to our guide or her voice was drowned out quite easily by the environment . The tour ended up in the MIT gift shop - all in all a decent tour .
Tour guide was excellent, enthusiastic and well educated about the history and culture at MIT. My nephew attends University in Germany and is a complete tech geek. I thought it would be good for him to get a glimpse of the college live in the US. I think he enjoyed hearing about various student hacks. I enjoyed seeing the campus and hearing about the history and architecture. I do recommend this tour is you have a couple hours to spend.
Our guide took us to many places of interest, guided by the special interest of each of us on the tour. He was unhurried and the tour took almost 2 hours. His knowledge and passion for MIT was clear and outstanding. Left with a great sense of the pedigree and pioneering work of this great institution.
